The authors study the Fitz-Hugh-Nagumo equations with cubic nonlinearity. In particular they are concerned with time-dependent (stationary) solutions, especially their stability and bifurcation as parameters in the problem changes. The approach is to treat the Fitz-Hugh-Nagumo equations as a dynamical system on an infinite dimensional space, and to show that stationary solutions correspond to ''nondegenerate'' rest points whose generalized Morse index can be calculated. They show the bifurcation of time-periodic solutions from stationary solutions as parameters are adjusted. The paper assumes familiarity with the Conley index.
