Our main result shows the relation between the closed graph theorem and the continuity theorem for the linear coefficients of a basis in a locally convex space: Theorem 1. Let E be a subspace of the locally convex space F such that every linear mapping from E into \(\ell^{\infty}(F)\), the space of bounded sequences in F endowed with the topology of uniform convergence, with closed graph \(E\times \ell^{\infty}(F)\) is continuous. If E has a weak basis, then it is a Schauder and equicontinuous basis of E and consequently of its completion \(\hat E.\) Applying the former result to the closed graph theorems of Ptàk, Saxon, de Wilde and Valdivia, we obtain many of the known cases of validity for the weak basis theorem as well as new applications. Particularly, the weak basis theorem holds in the following cases: on every barrelled and metrizable space; on every l.c. hull of Baire-like spaces with a countable covering of bounded subsets, for instance on every inductive limit of a sequence of normed barrelled spaces; on every strict inductive limit of a sequence of suprabarrelled and metrizable spaces; and on every l.c. hull of totally barrelled spaces with \({\mathcal C}\)-webbed local completion. The same results hold for bases of complete subspaces.
