    The paper is concerned with the minorant property (m) in the Schatten p- classes \(C_ p(\ell_ 2)\) and their finite-dimensional analogoues \(C_ p(\ell^ n_ 2):\) (m) holds iff \(A,B\in C_ p\) with \(| A| \leq B\) (meant elementwise for the canonical matrices) implies \(\| A\|_{C_ p}\leq \| B\|_{C_ p}\). It is known that (for \(k\in {\mathbb{N}})\) \(C_{2k}\) has (m) and that \(C_ p\) does not have (m) if \(p\not\in 2{\mathbb{N}}\). Also, for \(p\not\in 2{\mathbb{N}}\), \[ N(p):=\inf \{n\in {\mathbb{N}}| C_ p(\ell^ n_ 2)\quad has\quad (m)\} \] is known to be finite. The authors improve estimates of Simon by showing that \[ (i)\quad N(p)\leq [p/2]+2\quad and\quad (ii)\quad N(p)\geq 4\quad for\quad p>4. \] One has \(N(p)=[p/2]+2\) for \(1<p<6\), \(p\neq 2,4\) and this is conjectured to be true for all \(p\not\in 2{\mathbb{N}}.\) The paper considers a similar property \((m^+)\) where \(A,B\in C_ p\) and \(0\leq A\leq B\) implies \(\| A\|_{C_ p}\leq \| B\|_{C_ p}\). It is not known whether this is equivalent to (m).
