In a classical topology a space is \(T_ i\) \((i=0,1,2)\) if each pair of different points is separated in a \(T_ i\)-fashion, which means the existence of certain open sets, containing or not these points; this condition is satisfied or not, i.e. satisfied with a degree 1 or a degree 0. The separation properties introduced for fuzzy topological spaces up till now were of the same type. The authors introduce a new way of studying separation properties, by defining functions which measure the degree to which points can be separated in a \(T_ i\)-like fashion, degree which can take any value between 0 and 1; e.g., in a topological space (X,\({\mathcal T})\), the \(T_ 1\)-separation of points x and y is equivalent to \(\sup_{G\in {\mathcal T}}(1_ G(x)-1_ G(y))\wedge \sup_{G\in {\mathcal T}}(1_ G(y)-1_ G(x))=1\) (where \(1_ G\) is the characteristic function), and this leads to the definition of the \(T_ 1\)-separation degree of x and y in a fuzzy topological space (X,\(\Delta)\) by \(\sup_{\lambda \in \Delta}(\lambda (x)-\lambda (y))\wedge \sup_{\lambda \in \Delta}(\lambda (y)-\lambda (x))\). The \(T_ i\)-separation degree of a space is then the infimum of the \(T_ i\)-separation degrees of the pairs. The paper further studies the relations between the different local and global measures, the relation with previously defined separation properties, their behaviour with regard to subspaces and products, and their behaviour in the special classes of fuzzy neighborhood spaces and fuzzy uniform spaces.
