Consider a connected block design D(v,b,r,k). Let \(N=((n_{ij}))\) be the \(v\times b\) incidence matrix of the design D, where \(n_{ij}\) denotes the number of times the i-th treatment occurs in the j-th block. The \(M_ 0\)-matrix of the design D is defined as \(M_ 0=\{1/(rk)\}NN'- (1/v)1_ v1_ v'\), where \(1_ v\) is a \(v\times 1\) vector of units. An equireplicated block design is said to be partially efficiency-balanced (PEB) with m efficiency classes if a complete set of v-1 mutually orthogonal basic contrasts of treatment parameters can be partitioned into m disjoint classes such that the efficiency factor associated with every contrast of the i-th class is \(1-\mu_ i\), where \(\mu_ i\), \(i=1,2,...,m\), are the distinct eigenvalues of the \(M_ 0\)-matrix, with multiplicities \(\rho_ i\) such that \(\sum^{m}_{i=1}\rho_ i=v-1.\) A particular class of PEB designs, where \(\mu_ i\) takes only two distinct values \(\mu\) and 0 with respective multiplicities \(\rho\) and v- \(\rho\)-1, is called a simple PEB design. \textit{P. D. Puri} and \textit{S. Kageyama} [Commun. Stat., Theory Methods 14, 1315-1342 (1985; Zbl 0583.62071); ibid. 14, 1731-1744 (1985; Zbl 0577.62069)] gave several methods of constructing PEB designs with varying replications. In the present paper, as other useful methods of construction, the authors study some patterned PEB designs. These designs are obtained from equireplicated and equiblock-sized PEB designs using various patterns of block structures. It is shown that designs of \textit{Bhagwandas} and \textit{J. S. Parihar} [ibid. 11, 761-768 (1982; Zbl 0512.62078)] and \textit{Bhagwandas}, \textit{S. Banerjee} and \textit{S. Kageyama} [ibid. 14, 1259-1267 (1985; Zbl 0574.62072)] can be derived as particular cases of the designs which are presented here. The basic contrasts of new designs along with associated efficiency factors are also given.
