Ray methods are shown to provide a direct approach to the solution of exterior elasto-dynamic problems involving the region outside a circular cavity in a plane elastic body subjected to moving normal and tangential tractions acting at the surface of the cavity and described as arbitrary functions of the polar angle \(\theta\) and the time t. As a check on the formal ray series approach a particular problem is solved by transform techniques and its asymptotic expansion compared to that generated by the ray series method. The two methods were found to be in complete agreement up to the first three terms of the wavefront expansion.
