The axially-symmetric expansion of an annular plate, subjected to uniform internal pressure, is investigated within the framework of plane-stress small-strain plasticity. Material behaviour is governed by the Tresca yield function along with its associated flow rule. For the case of arbitrary hardening we show that the problem is reduced to a system of transcendental equations. An exact solution is possible with a particular power-hardening characteristic suggested by \textit{B. Budiansky} [Prikl. Mat. Mekh. 35, 40-48 (1971; Zbl 0249.73040)]. Numerical illustrations are presented for the load-displacement curves.
