The paper reveals an error in the well-known formula by \textit{M. K. Kassir} and \textit{G. Sih} [Three-dimensional crack problems (1975; Zbl 0312.73112)] related to the stress intensity factor for an external elliptical crack in a three-dimensional medium. An elementary derivation of the correct formula is given. Some numerical results are presented which illustrate the difference between the formulae.
