If \(\Pi\) is a translation plane of order \(p^{2R}\), p prime, then a B- group is a p-group B in the translation complement of \(\Pi\) with \(| B| >p^{R/2}\) and \(Fix (B)=\Pi_ B\) is a Baer subplane of \(\Pi\) (called the axis of B). The main theorem proved in this paper is the following: Let \(\Pi\) be a translation plane of odd order \(p^{2R}\). Then \(\Pi\) is a Hall plane or \(\Pi\) contains at most one maximal B-group in its translation complement. This is analogous to a (weaker) result of \textit{U. Dempwolff} [J. Geom. 19, 101-114 (1982; Zbl 0511.51004)] and of the present authors (pre- print) on translation planes of order \(2^ 2\).
