Let \(x: M^ n\to {\mathbb{R}}^{n+m}\) be a nonconstant map of a compact Riemannian n-manifold. If its spectral decomposition (associated to the Laplacian of M, with spectrum \(0=\lambda_ 0<\lambda_ 1<...)\) has finite representation \(x=x_ 0+\sum^{q}_{p}\) \(x_ t\), where \(x_ 0\) is a constant vector and q is the largest integer with \(x_ q\neq 0\), say x has order [p,q]; and k-type if exactly k of the \(x_ t\) are \(\neq 0\) (t\(\geq 1)\). Typical results: 1) \(2\lambda_ pE(x)\leq \int_{M}\| \tau_ x\|^ 2\leq 2\lambda_ qE(x)\), where \(E(x)=1/2\int | dx|^ 2\) and \(\tau_ x\) is its Euler-Lagrange operator. We have equality iff x has 1-type. 2) Let \(x: M\to S^{n+m-1}\subset {\mathbb{R}}^{n+m}\) be a map for which \(x_ 0\) is the centre of \(S^{n+m-1}\). Then E(x)\(\geq \lambda_ 1/2 vol M\), with equality iff x has order [1,1]. 3) Various topological conditions are given to insure that the Gauss map of x has k-type \(>m/2\).
