An approach is suggested to evaluate the relative accuracy of numerical boundary conditions for the forced initial boundary value problems by illustrating it through two methods applied for solving the one- dimensional shallow water equations. The numerical methods are Richardson-Sielecki (RS) scheme and the Galerkin finite element (FEMI) method. Numerical model tests show that the analysis results are partially confirmed with the RS scheme when C (coefficient of linear bottom friction) is zero, both radiating and driving/radiating boundaries become more accurate as higher orders of space-time extrapolations applied to the outgoing characteristic variables. Accuracy is highest with long waves. With FEMI analysis, the extraneous boundary conditions constructed using constant space-time extrapolation of the outgoing characteristic variables are more accurate than those constructed from the Box scheme or from constant or linear spatial extrapolation.
