Consider the differential equation \[ (1.1)\quad y''+(k^ 2- q(x))y=0,\quad 0\leq x<b\leq \infty, \] where \(q\in L^ 1_{loc}[0,b)\) and Im \(k^ 2\neq 0\). Write D(x,k) for the compact set enclosed by the circle which is the image of the real line under the map \[ \xi \mapsto M(\xi)=-\{\theta (x)-\xi \theta '(x)\}/\{\phi (x)-\xi \phi '(x)\}, \] \(\theta\),\(\phi\) being the solutions of (1.1) satisfying the initial conditions \(\theta (0)=0\), \(\theta '(0)=1\), \(\phi (0)=-1\), \(\phi '(0)=0\). Supposing that there exist \(X\in (0,1]\) and \(B\geq 1\) such that \(q\in C^{\infty}[0,X]\) and \(| q^{(j)}(x)| \leq 2BX^{-j}j!\) for \(x\in [0,X]\) and \(j=0,1,2,...\), the author defines a certain function M(k) of the form \(M(k)=\sum^{N+1}_{n=1}b_ nk^{-n}\) for \(NBX^{- 1}\leq | k| <(N+1)BX^{-1}\) and gives the following theorem: Theorem 1. There exist constants A and C such that \[ | m-M(k)| \leq C| \alpha |^{-1}e^{-\beta X}+C(\beta^{-1}| k|^{-3/2}+| k|^{1/2})e^{(-)B^{-1}X| k|} \] for all \(m\in D(X,k)\), provided \(\alpha >A\) and \(\beta >A\). The results of a computer program which calculates \(b_ n\) \((n=1,...,30)\) for some particular functions q(x) are presented as well.
