Consider the Fourier series of a square-integrable function, corresponding to a Riesz basis consisting of eigenfunctions (of possibly higher order) of an ordinary linear differential operator (of possibly higher order). There are no assumptions on the distribution of the possibly complex eigenvalues, and there are no boundary conditions. We show that all these expansions behave locally in the same way, hence many results known for the trigonometrical system remain valid for all the above orthonormal or Riesz bases, too. For example, Carleson's theorem holds for ''all'' eigenfunction expansions.
