A semi-embedding of a Banach Y into a Banach space X is a bounded linear injection T of Y ito X so that the image in X of the unit ball in Y is closed. Obviously, every isomorphic embedding of Y into X is a semi- embedding, and although the converse is not true there are certain respects in which semi-embeddings have the same properties as isomorphic ones [see, e.g., \textit{J. Bourgain} and \textit{H. Rosenthal}, J. Funct. Anal. 52, 149-188 (1983; Zbl 0541.46020)]. In this paper the relationship between isomorphic embeddings, semi- embeddings, and \(G_{\delta}\)-embeddings (the image of every closed and bounded subset of Y is a \(G_{\delta}\)-set in X) is explored. Among others, the following result is proved: If E is a separable Banach space, the following are equivalent. 1) E does not contain a subspace isomorphic to a conjugate space. 2) Every \(G_{\delta}\)-embedding of E in any Banach space is an isomorphic embedding. 3) For any equivalent renorming of E every semi-embedding of E in an arbitrary Banach space is an isomorphic embedding.
