Let \(S=(P,B,I)\) be a finite generalized quadrangle of order (s,t) [see \textit{J. W. P. Hirschfeld}, ''Projective geometries over finite fields'' (1979; Zbl 0418.51002)]. Given two points x,y of S, we write \(x\sim y\) provided there is some line L for which xILIy. And \(x\nsim y\) means that x and y are not collinear. For \(x\in P\) put \(x^{\perp}=\{y\in P: y\sim x\}\) and for \(A\subset P\) put \(A^{\perp}=\cap \{x^{\perp}: x\in A\}\). A pair (x,y), \(x\nsim y\), is antiregular iff \(| z^{\perp}\cap \{x,y\}^{\perp}| \leq 2,\) for all \(z\in P\setminus \{x,y\}\). The point x is antiregular iff (x,y) is antiregular for all \(y\nsim x\). A set K of S is a (0,2)-set iff K consists of pairwise non-collinear points such that for each point \(x\in K\) there holds \(| x^{\perp}\cap K| \in \{0,2\}\). The points of a non-singular quadric Q of index 2 in PG(4,q) together with the lines of Q form a generalized quadrangle Q(4,q) of order \(s=t=q\). The author's ultimate aim is to formulate a characterization for Q(4,q), q odd, based on the concept of (0,2)-set ''by assuming local conditions in an antiregular point x of a generalized quadrangle of order s''. The details are too involved to be described here; the reader may find them in the original paper.
