The strength of a three-dimensionally reinforced composite is examined. The composite comprises a matrix reinforced by a system of cylindrical fibers which forms a periodic structure. Young's modulus of fibers is taken to be much greater than that of the matrix. Then, the effective elastic tensor and the local stresses are expressed by the series expansions in terms of the volume fractions of fibers and the averaged deformations, respectively. The strength condition for the composite is derived, and the related theorems are presented. Also, the optimal reinforcement of a medium is studied, and the results are generalized to the case of a nonlinear system of elasticity equations. (It is uneasy to read the paper since the translation into English seems to be poor.)
