(From authors' conclusions.) An alternative scheme for the integration of the rate plasticity constitutive equations is presented, developed with the aim of achieving at the same time a predictable accuracy and a high degree of generality. The algorithm is based on two main features: The automatical local linearization of the yield surface. The stress point is forced to move along a piecewise linear trajectory which always lies on planes tangent to the yield surface; it is possible to control the accuracy of this process by prescribing ''a priori'' the maximum allowed violation of the yield condition. An algorithm, based on the physics of the problem, for solving the linear complementarity problem which gives the plastic strain moduli given the total strain rate. Comparisons to exact solutions show that good accuracy can be achieved at a limited cost; the method is applicable to any plasticity model governed by a convex yield function without loosing its accuracy and stability characteristics. Results of the deformation theory of plasticity can be obtained as well via a considerable simplification of the LCP algorithm. Results are compared to those provided by standard techniques and to exact solutions for the simple case of a von Mises, elastic-perfectly plastic material.
