A new approach to the calculation of two-layered flows is investigated. The method is based on the mathematical formulation of two-phase flows; the two layers are identified as the two phases. Applications to geophysical flows, where the Coriolis force is a prominent feature, are described and analysed and idealized situations (flat bottom, frictionless boundaries, etc.) are specified in order to facilitate comparisons with available analytical solutions. It is concluded that the method holds promise as a general method for two-layered flows. The comparisons with the analytical solutions are encouraging and motivate further applications to more complex situations.
