Given arbitrary disjoint intervals \(\{I_ k\}\) of the real line, it is proved that the square function \(Sf(x)=(\sum_{k}| S_{I_ k}f(x)|^ 2)^{1/2}\) (where \(S_{I_ k}\) are the partial sums: \((S_{I_ k}f){\hat{\;}}=\hat f\chi_{I_ k})\) defines a bounded operator in \(L^ p({\mathbb{R}})\), \(2\leq p<\infty\). Two special cases were previously known: The case of a lacunary sequence of intervals (corresponding to classical Littlewood-Paley theory), in which boundedness is obtained for all \(L^ p\), \(1<p<\infty\); and the case of equal length intervals. The proof consists in treating the operator as a vector valued singular integral, after a reduction argument which allows to smooth out the partial sums \(S_{I_ k}\). This theorem has been extended to \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) (with disjoint n-dimensional intervals) by \textit{J.-L. Journé} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 1, 55-92 (1985)]. Applications to multiplier theorems can be found in a forthcoming paper by R. Coifman, J. L. Rubio de Francia and S. Semmes.
