The paper is concerned with the boundedness properties of maximal and singular integral operators along a curve \(\Gamma (t)=(t,\gamma (t))\) in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 2\) passing through the origin: \(\gamma (0)=0\). The operators in question are \[ Mf(x)=\sup_{h>0}\frac{1}{2h}| \int^{h}_{- h}f(x-\Gamma (t))dt| Hf(x)=p.v.\int^{\infty}_{-\infty}f(x-\Gamma (t))\frac{dt}{t} \] \[ H^*f(x)=\sup_{\epsilon >0}| \int_{| t| >\epsilon}f(x-\Gamma (t))\frac{dt}{t}|. \] The case of non- flat curves (i.e., with \(\gamma^{(k)}(0)\neq 0\) for some \(k\in {\mathbb{N}})\) was settled by \textit{E. M. Stein} and \textit{S. Wainger} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 84, 1239-1295 (1978; Zbl 0393.42010)]. The conditions given in the paper under review allow flatness of infinite order, and are close to best possible; they are as follows: a) \(\Gamma\) is biconvex: \(| \gamma '(t)|\) increases as \(| t|\) increases b) \(\gamma\) ' has doubling time: \(| \gamma '(Ct)| \geq 2| \gamma '(t)|\) for some \(C>1\) c) \(\gamma\) is balanced: \(| \gamma (k^{-1}t)| \leq | \gamma (-t)| \leq | \gamma (kt)|\) for some \(k>1. (break?) \) Under these conditions, M, H and \(H^*\) are bounded in \(L^ p({\mathbb{R}}^ 2)\) for all \(1<p<\infty\). Condition c) is necessary for \(L^ 2\)-boundedness, and so is b) if the curve is even. For even or odd curves, the boundedness of M and H is proved, by a slightly different argument, in Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 14, 263-267 (1986) by \textit{H. Carlsson}, \textit{M. Christ}, \textit{A. Córdoba}, \textit{J. Duoandikoetxea}, \textit{J. L. Rubio de Francia}, \textit{J. Vance}, \textit{S. Wainger} and \textit{D. Weinberg}.
