Let G be an infinite compact abelian group with dual group \(\Gamma\). Let e be a complex-valued function on \(\Gamma\). Let \(\mathbf{1}_ F\) denote the characteristic function of the Borel subset \(F\subseteq G\). The main results are as follows. (1) If \(\sup _{\gamma}| e(\gamma)\mathbf{1}_{\hat F}(\gamma)| <\infty\) for all compact subsets F of G, then e is bounded. (2) That result is formulated as a theorem about \(L^ 1\)- spaces and the group structure dispensed with. (3) There exists a compact subset F of G such that \(\mathbf{1}_{\hat F}\not\in L^ p(G)\) for all \(p<2\). Versions for noncompact and nonabelian groups are given. The key idea in all cases is a Nikodým uniform boundedness principle valid for the ring of compact sets: if \(T_ n\) are finitely additive functions from the compact subsets of G to a Banach space X such that for all compact sets F,\(\sup _{n}\| T_ n(F)\|\) is finite for each compact set, then \(\sup _{n,F}\| T_ n(F)\|\) is finite, where the sets F range over compact subsets of a fixed compact set. The mappings \(T_ n\) must obey a continuity condition.
