Let X be a completely regular Hausdorff space, V a system of weights on X, and denote by \(CV(X)=\{f:X\to {\mathbb{K}}| p_ v(f)=\sup_{x\in X}v(x)| f(x)| <\infty\), \(\forall v\in V\}\) where \({\mathbb{K}}={\mathbb{R}}\) or \({\mathbb{K}}={\mathbb{C}}\). Then CV(X) with the seminorms \(p_ v\), \(v\in V\) is a locally convex space. Let H be a subspace of CV(X). H is said to have property (*) if for each \(x\in X\) there is \(f\in H\) such that f(x)\(\neq 0.\) Assume H is a solid subspace with property (*), H has an absorbent sequence \({\mathcal B}=(B_ n)\) of bounded sets, and all \(v\in V\) or all the functions \(\beta_ n(x)=\sup_{f\in B_ n}| f(x)|\) are continuous. Then a new system of weights \(V_ B\) on X is construced such that \(CV_ B(X)\) induces on H and even on every solid subspace of H the associated (gDF)-topology. If CV(X) has property (*) and an absorbent sequence \({\mathcal B}\) of bounded sets, there is a finest system of weights \(V_ b\) on X such that \({\mathcal B}\) is a fundamental sequence of bounded sets for \(CV_ b(X)\). Then, if all \(v\in V\) or all \(\beta_ n\) are continuous, \(V\leq V_{{\mathcal B}}\leq V_ b=V_{b_{{\mathcal B}}}\) and \(CV_ b(X)\) is a (gDF)-space. In the last part there is a criterion for \(CV_ 0(X)\) to be quasibarrelled: Assume \(CV_ 0(X)\) has a fundamental sequence \({\mathcal B}\) of bounded sets, \(CV_ 0(X)\) has property (*), and all \(\beta_ n\) are continuous. Then \(CV_ 0(X)\) is quasibarrelled if, and only if, V and \(V_ b\) are equivalent.
