The ''Maaß Spezialschar'' is a certain space of Siegel modular forms of degree 2, characterized by special properties of the Fourier coefficients; this space is closely related to the Saito-Kurokawa mapping, to Jacobi modular forms and modular forms of half-integral weight (for all this see e.g. chap. II of \textit{M. Eichler} and \textit{D. Zagier} [The theory of Jacobi forms (Prog. Math. 55) (1985; Zbl 0554.10018)]. In the paper under review the author considers an analogue of the Maaß Spezialschar for modular forms on the half space of quaternions of degree 2 (for generalities on this kind of modular forms see the author's book [Modular forms on half-spaces of quaternions (Lect. Notes Math. 1143) (1985; Zbl 0564.10032)]. It turns out that - via Fourier- Jacobi expansion - the modular forms in question are related to elliptic modular forms of even weight on a congruence subgroup of level 2; this is in contrast to the Spezialschar in the usual sense, where one gets modular forms of half-integral weight with level 4. Also the relation between the Maaß space for quaternion modular forms and the Maaß spaces for other types of modular forms (Siegel and Hermitian modular forms) is investigated. In particular, the Maaß space over the quaternions and the Maaß space in the usual sense are isomorphic via the obvious restriction map.
