In earlier papers, the present authors have made a deep study of ''zeta- functions'' associated with the counting of left ideals X in an arithmetic order \(\Lambda\) according to the index (\(\Lambda\) :X) of X in \(\Lambda\) ; see their survey article [Lect. Notes Math. 1142, 50-87 (1985; Zbl 0575.12007)]. Here \(\Lambda\) is a \({\mathbb{Z}}\)-order (or \({\mathbb{Z}}_ p\)- order) in a finite-dimensional semisimple \({\mathbb{Q}}\)-algebra (or \({\mathbb{Q}}_ p\)-algebra). The present paper develops the analogous basic theory for the local case, of a more precise type of zeta-function, associated with counting according to the \(\Lambda\)-composition factors of the finite module \(\Lambda\) /X. The methods used extend those they have employed previously and also lead to some sharper versions of earlier results. For example the authors sharpen earlier functional equations for group rings, and even derive a new, purely algebraic conclusion about composition factors of \(\Lambda\)- modules in certain cases.
