The authors give a simple, combinatorial, characteristic-free proof of the first fundamental theorem of invariant theory. In the literature, one can find combinatorial proofs of the first fundamental theorem, due to Doubilet, Rota, Stein, De Concini, Procesi, etc. The difference of this proof from the earlier proofs lies in the fact that whereas the earlier proofs make use of Young bitableaux, this proof involves only single tableaux.
