    Main result: Let X be a smooth toric variety of dimension n (over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero) which is embedded as an ample divisor into a smooth variety Y. Then either \(X\cong {\mathbb{P}}^ n\), \(Y\cong {\mathbb{P}}^{n+1}\) and X is a hyperplane in Y, or X and Y are fiber bundles over \({\mathbb{P}}^ 1\) whose fibers are projective spaces, \(X\cong {\mathbb{P}}({\mathcal E})\), \(Y\cong {\mathbb{P}}({\mathcal F})\), and there exists an exact sequence of locally free sheaves on \({\mathbb{P}}^ 1\), \[ 0\quad \to \quad {\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb{P}}^ 1}\quad \to \quad {\mathcal F}\quad \to \quad {\mathcal E}\quad \to \quad 0 \] which induces the embedding \(X\to Y\). Moreover, each such X can be embedded in such a way into a suitable fiber bundle Y.
