Let S be a ring and I a two-sided ideal of S. \(I^{<n>}\) are the ideals of S defined inductively by \(I^{<1>}=I\) and \(I^{<n+1>}=[I^{<n>},I^{<n>}]S\) where \([I^{<n>},I^{<n>}]\) is the additive subgroup of S generated by all the Lie products \([x,y]=xy-yx\) with \(x,y\in I^{<n>}\). In this paper the author proves the following theorem: Let G be a finite group, G' the commutator subgroup of G, and \(\Delta\) the augmentation ideal of the integral group ring \({\mathbb{Z}}G\). Then \(\cap_{n}\Delta^{<n>}=(0)\) if and only if G' is a p-group for some prime p. In this case \(\Delta\) is called residually Lie solvable. The author remarks that the method of proof can be used to simplify proofs of known results concerning (residually) Lie nilpotent or Lie solvable augmentation ideals.
