The authors develop a new thermodynamic theory for non-reacting mixtures of viscous fluids. The original aspect of this theory is the introduction of the dissipative fluxes, namely the heat flux, the diffusion fluxes and the dissipative stress tensor among the set of independent variables. The entropy flux is not guessed from the start but it is assumed to be given by a constitutive equation. Restrictions on the form of the constitutive and evolution equations are placed by the second principle of thermodynamics. The analysis is developed for a multicomponent mixture. A section is devoted to the treatment of two-fluid mixture in order to compare with earlier results.
