The authors give upper bounds for the logarithmic discrepancy of the sequence \((\alpha n+\beta \log n)\). From \textit{E. Hlawka} [Manuscr. Math. 44, 231-263 (1983; Zbl 0516.10030)] one obtains the bounds C(B)/\(\sqrt{\log N}\). The authors obtain the bound \(C_ 1(B)(\log N)^ 2/\log N\) (generalizing a method of van der Corput on exponential sums). For rational \(\alpha\) or \(\alpha\) of finite approximation type they obtain the (best possible) bound C(\(\alpha\),B)/log N. Finally they prove that certain sequences \(a_ n\) have the property that \(x_ n+\alpha_ n\) is uniformly distributed (with respect to positive weights p(n)) for any u.d. sequence \(x_ n.\) [The given reference for the case p(k)\(\equiv 1\), namely the reviewer, Acta Arith. 35, 189-193 (1979; Zbl 0335.10051)] should be replaced e.g. by \textit{G. Rauzy}, Étude de quelques ensembles de fonctions définis par des propriétés de moyenne. Sémin. Théor. Nombres 1972/1973, Univ. Bordeaux, Exp. No.20 (1973; Zbl 0293.10018) but the essential result in both papers is the characterization of such sequences).]
