As a first step towards a new duality theorem for compact groups we consider a representation category \(T_ G\) of a compact Lie group \(G\subset U(d,{\mathbb{C}})\) whose objects are the tensor powers of the defining representation and whose arrows are the intertwiners. We associate to \(T_ G\) in a natural way a \(C^*\)-algebra \({\mathcal O}_ G\) which can be identified with the fixed points of the Cuntz algebra \({\mathcal O}_ d\) under the natural action of G. \({\mathcal O}_ G\) carries a canonical endomorphism \(\sigma_ G\) and \(T_ G\) can be reconstructed from \(\{\) \({\mathcal O}_ G,\sigma_ G\}\). If \(G\subset SU(d)\) then \({\mathcal O}_ G\) is simple. We give conditions for an endomorphism \(\rho\) of a unital \(C^*\)-algebra A to determine an action of \(T_{SU(d)}\) on A. Such actions correspond to *-monomorphisms of \({\mathcal O}_{SU(d)}\) into A with natural intertwining properties. Based on these results compact group duals can be characterized abstractly through their actions on \(C^*\)-algebras [cf. the authors, ''Compact group actions on \(C^*\)-algebras'', J. Oper. Theory, to appear; ''Endomorphisms of \(C^*\)-algebras, Cross products and Duality for compact groups'', preprint].
