A (bounded linear) operator T on a (complex, separable, infinite dimensional) Banach space X is triangular if there exists an increasing family \(\{M_ n\}^{\infty}_{n=0}\) of invariant subspaces of T such that dim \(M_ n=n\) for all \(n\geq 0\), and \(\cup_{n}M_ n\) is dense in X. An algebra A of operators acting on X has finite strict multiplicity if there exist finitely many vectors \(e_ 1,e_ 2,...,e_ m\) in X such that \(x=linear span \{Ae_ 1,Ae_ 2,...,Ae_ m\}\). If T is triangular then either T is algebraic and the double commutant of T has infinite strict multiplicity, or T is not algebraic and its commutant has infinite strict multiplicity. It is also shown that if T is rationally strictly cyclic, but not strictly cyclic, then the weak closure of the polynomials in T has infinite strict multiplicity.
