The paper is a comprehensive study of various factorization theorems for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces. These theorems, in principle, fall into the following categories (\(T\) is a bounded linear operator from a Banach space \(X\) into a Banach space \(Y\)): 1. \(X\) is the space \(L_ r(\Omega,\mu),\) 2. \(Y\) is the space \(L_ r(\Omega,\mu),\) 3. \(X\) is the space of continuous functions on a locally compact space vanishing at infinity, 4. \(X\) is a \(C^*\)-algebra. In each case the spaces through which T factorizes are described in detail. These are: in case \(1-L_{p\infty}\)-spaces, in cases 2 and \(3- L_{q1}\)-spaces, and in case 4-noncommutative \(L_ p\)-spaces. In studying factorization problems, the notion of importance is that of \((q,p)\)-summing operators which in case 4 is generalized to the \(C^*\)- algebra context yielding the so-called \((q,p)\)-\(C^*\)-summing operators. For instance, it turns out that T is \((q,1)\)-\(C^*\)-summing with \(q>1\) iff it factorizes through some noncommutative \(L_{q1}(f)\)-space. An application of the factorization theory for \(C^*\)-algebras for proving noncommutative Rosenthal's theorem on embedding any reflexive subspace of the predual of a von Neumann algebra into a noncommutative \(L_ p(f)\)- space is also presented.
