In a previous paper [ibid. 60, 373-376 (1984; Zbl 0573.57009)] the author investigated cohomological properties of a canonical map, called the Jacobi mapping, from a surface bundle with a cross section to its associated family of Jacobian manifolds, and derived relations among characteristic classes of surfaces bundles. In the present announcement new relations are obtained by considering surface bundles without cross sections. It is shown that for any given surface bundle \(\pi\) : \(E\to X\), there is a canonical flat \(T^{2g}\)-bundle \(\pi\) ': J'\(\to X\) with structure group \(T^{2g}\ltimes Sp(2g; {\mathbb{Z}})\) (the semidirect product of a torus and the Siegel modular group) and a natural fiber preserving map j': \(E\to J'\) such that the restriction of j' to each fiber induces an isomorphism on first homology (a topological version of \textit{C. J. Earle}'s embedding theorem stating that any holomorphic family of compact Riemann surfaces can be embedded in an associated family of Jacobian varieties in an essentially unique way [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 107, 255-286 (1978; Zbl 0353.32027)]).
