Multistage methods for interpolating and approximating three-dimensional scattered data are presented. The first state forms several local least squares polynomial approximations of degree two or three; the second is a piecewise bicubic Hermite interpolant to gridded data. The third (optional) stage consists of a modified Sheppard's method. Reasons for these choices are explained. Error bounds depending on the maximum distance from the nearest data points are derived. Comparisons with other methods are indicated and a wide bibliography (25 titles) included.
