Let \(\Lambda =\{\lambda \}^{\infty}_{i=1}\) be a sequence of positive numbers satisfying \(0<\lambda_ 1\leq \lambda_ 2\leq,...,\sum^{\infty}_{i=1}1/\lambda_ i=\infty\). A functional of f: [a,b]\(\to C\) is called of \(\Lambda\)-bounded variation if for each sequence \(\{I_ n\}^{\infty}_{n=1}\) of disjoint open intervals in [a,b], the series \(\sum^{\infty}_{i=1}| f(I_ i)| /\lambda_ i\) converges. Here \(f(I_ i)\) stands for the oscillation of the function f on the interval I. For any such function the quantity \(V_ a(f,[[a,b])=\sup \sum^{n}_{i=1}| f(I_ i)| \lambda_ i\) is finite, where the supremum is taken over all finite systems of pairwise disjoint open intervals lying in [a,b]. The \(V_ a(f,[a,b])\) is called the \(\Lambda\)-variation of the function f on [a,b]. Next the author considers \(2\pi\)-periodic functions \(f: R\to {\mathbb{C}}\). Their \(\Lambda\)-variation is defined as \(V_{\Lambda}(f)=\sup_{\gamma}V_{\Lambda}(f,[\gamma,\gamma +2\pi]).\) Let \(\hat f(n)\) denote the nth Fourier coefficient of the function f with respect to the system \(\{e^{inx}\}^{n=\infty}_{n=-\infty}\), and set \(L_{\Lambda}(m)=\sum^{m}_{i=1}1/\lambda_ i.\) Theorem 1. For the Fourier coefficients of a function f of \(\Lambda\)-bounded variation the following estimate holds \(| \hat f(n)| \leq C_{\Lambda}(f)/L_{\Lambda}(2| n|)\) for \(n=\pm 1,\pm 2,...\). Four more theorems on the coefficients of a Fourier series are proved.
