In C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 299, 173-176 (1984; Zbl 0563.46042) we presented several equivalent conditions, including square integral estimates of the form \[ \{\int^{\infty}_{0}\lambda^{2\theta - 1}\| A^{1-\theta}(\lambda +A)^{-1}f\|^ 2d\lambda \}^{1/2}\leq M_{\theta}\| f\|,\quad f\in X \] \[ \{\int^{\infty}_{0}\lambda^{2\theta -1}\| A^{*1- \theta}(\lambda +A^*)^{-1}g\|^ 2d\lambda \}^{1/2}\leq M^*_{\theta}\| g\|,\quad g\in X, \] in order that the purely imaginary powers \(A^{iy}\) \((-\infty <y<\infty)\) of a linear operator A in a Hilbert space X are bounded operators. In this paper we utilize the result to consider various problems arising in the study of evolution equations (generation of the cosine families in Hilbert spaces, coincidence of the definition domains of the fractional powers of two operators, and so forth). Especially we consider in general manner differentiability of the functions of the form \(A(\cdot)^{\theta}\) \((0<\theta <1)\) where A(\(\cdot)\) are operator valued functions on an interval [0,T] in a Hilbert space.
