Let \(T=(\phi_{i-j})^{\infty}_{i,j=0}\) be an infinite \(m\times m\) block Toeplitz operator, and let \(T_ N=(\phi_{i-j})^ N_{i,j=0}\) be its N-th finite section. The Szegö limit formulas describe the asymptotic behaviour of det \(T_ N\) for \(N\to \infty\) in terms of the matrix symbol \(\Phi (\zeta)=\sum^{\infty}_{\nu =- \infty}\zeta^{\nu}\phi_{\nu}\). In this paper new formulas are derived for the case when the symbol \(\Phi\) is rational or analytic on \(| \zeta | =1\). The starting point is a representation of \(\Phi\) in the form \(\Phi (\zeta)=I+\zeta C(I-\zeta A)^{-1}B\), \(| \zeta | =1\). Here A, B and C are operators or matrices in the case when \(\Phi\) is rational. The constants in the Szegö formulas are expressed in terms of A, B, C and their spectral characteristics. E.g., the so-called strong Szegö limit is proved to be equal to \(\det [(I-P)(I-Q)+PQ],\) where P and Q are the Riesz projections of A and A-BC, respectively, corresponding to the eigenvalues inside the closed unit disk. Also direct proofs of the limit formulas, based on spectral arguments, are given. For the rational case the constants have a linear algebra flavour and they are the result of operations in finite-dimensional linear spaces. The second part of the paper concerns the continual analogue, the Kac- Achiezer formulas for Wiener-Hopf operators on a finite interval. Here the symbol is written as \(W(\lambda)=I+C(\lambda -A)^{-1}B\), \(\lambda\in {\mathbb{R}}\). In the continuous case the limit formulas are also derived for cases where the classical theorems do not apply, namely for certain integral operators that are neither trace class nor have continuous kernels.
