A 4(n\(+1)\)-dimensional model reference controller is presented which can perform the following two functions. First it stabilizes any single- input, single-output process. Then it forces the process output to track the output of a prespecified reference model. Here it is assumed that the process is restricted to the class of linear finite-dimensional causal systems which are stabilizable, of minimum phase, their relative degree not exceeding two and with a known upper bound of their dimensionality. The ideas presented here are identical to previous ones given by the author. Here the basic difference is that the control law incorporates both the reference model state and input. Thus model following is made possible with one algorithm for processes of relative degree 1 and 2.
