The main object of this paper is to give a short proof of a recent theorem of \textit{J. Kollár} [Ann. Math. II. Ser. 123, 11-42 (1986; Zbl 0598.14015), Theorem 2.1(i)] to the effect that, if \(f: X\to Y\) is a surjective holomorphic map from a compact Kähler manifold to a projective variety and L is a semiample line bundle on X, then the sheaves \(R^ if_*(\omega_ X\otimes L)\) are torsion-free. A somewhat more general theorem is also given.
