    The following initial-boundary value problem is considered: \[ u_ t(x,t) = \Delta_ x\{(c_ 1+d_ 1v(x,t))u(x,t)\}\quad +\quad (e_ 1- a_ 1v(x,t)-b_ 1u(x,t))u(x,t), \] \[ v_ t(x,t) = \Delta_ x\{(c_ 2+d_ 2u(x,t))v(x,t)\}\quad +\quad (e_ 2-a_ 2u(x,t)-b_ 2v(x,t))v(x,t) \] for (x,t)\(\in {\bar \Omega}\times [0,\infty)\); \(u(x,0)=W_ 1(x)\), \(v(x,0)=W_ 2(x)\), for \(x\in {\bar \Omega}\); \(\partial /\partial n(x)u(x,t)=\partial /\partial n(x)v(x,t)=0\) for (x,t)\(\in \partial \Omega \times [0,\infty)\). Here \(\Omega \subset {\mathbb{R}}^ N\) is a bounded domain; n the outward unit normal to \(\Omega\) ; \(a_ i,...,e_ i\) nonnegative constants, \(W_ i\in C^ 0({\bar \Omega})\) with \(W_ i\geq 0.\) This problem arises in population dynamics, as a model for two competing populations. Take m,M\(\in (0,\infty)\) with \(m\leq M\). Then it is shown there is a number \(\epsilon >0\) such that the above problem has a unique classical solution, provided \(b_ i,c_ i\in [m,M]\), \(a_ i,e_ i\in [0,M]\), \(d_ i\in [0,\epsilon]\), \(W_ i\in C^ 2({\bar \Omega})\), \(| W_ i|_{2,\alpha}\leq M\), \(W_ i\geq 0\). Here \(| |_{2,\alpha}\) denotes a certain Hölder-norm.
