Let X denote a separable symmetric Banach sequence space, with the sequence \((e_ n)^{\infty}_{n=0}\) of unit vectors as a basis for X. Let \(x_ 0\) be a finitely nonzero sequence in X and let W be a weighted shift operator (with respect to \((e_ n)^{\infty}_{n=0})\) with finitely many weights different from one. The deficient basic sequence properties of \((W^ nx_ 0)^{\infty}_{n=0}\) are characterized in terms of the location of the zeros of a polynomial associated with \(x_ 0\) and W. The similarity of two such sequences and a particular type of the basis (type P) are also characterized.
