The two-dimensional Schrödinger operator \[ H=(- i\frac{\partial}{\partial x}-a)^ 2+(-i\frac{\partial}{\partial y}-b)^ 2 \] as self-adjoint realization in \({\mathcal H}=L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ 2)\) is considered. Here a and b are the operators of multiplication by real valued \(C^{\infty}\) functions. After formulation of the following conditions on the magnetic field \[ B(x,y)=\frac{\partial b}{\partial x}(x,y)-\frac{\partial a}{\partial y}(x,y) \] (B) B(x,y) depends only on x, B(x) is such that there exist constants \(M_{\pm}\) satisfying \(0<M_-\leq B(x)\leq M_+<\infty\) for all x. (B1) In addition to (B), \(\limsup_{x\to -\infty}B(x)<\liminf_{x\to \infty}B(x)\) or \(\limsup_{x\to \infty}B(x)<\liminf_{x\to - \infty}B(x)\) holds. (B2) In addition to (B), \(B(x)=B_ 0\) for some constant \(B_ 0\) if \(| x|\) is sufficiently large, and there exists a point \(\bar x\) such that B'(x)\(\geq 0\) for \(x\leq \bar x\) and B'(x)\(\geq 0\) for \(x\geq \bar x\) (or B'(x)\(\geq 0\) for \(x\leq \bar x\) and B'(x)\(\leq 0\) for \(x\geq \bar x)\) and B'(x) is not identically 0. Iwatsuka proves that H is absolutely continuous in case (B1) as well as in case (B2), i.e. the subspace of absolute continuity \({\mathcal H}_{ac}\) fills up the whole space \({\mathcal H}\).
