The classical Dehn-Sommerville equations connect the numbers of faces of simplicial polytopes, and one simple formulation of these equations eventually provided the tool for the complete classification of the f- vectors of simplicial polytopes. It has long been known that the Dehn- Sommerville equations generalize quite widely. In this paper, the author considers homology manifolds, without boundary or with `good' boundaries, and proves an upper bound theorem for the numbers of their faces, given the number of vertices.
