Firstly, the multigrid method is illustrated by using it to the solution of a one-dimensional scalar equation. Next the method is tested on the two-dimensional problem of transonic flow through a straight channel. The performance of the multigrid scheme is compared with that of the embedded single grid scheme. The gain in efficiency with respect to the latter scheme is of order \(N^{0.4}\), where N is the total number of zones. The paper is purely computational since mathematically rigorous analysis is not carried out; for instance regularity properties of data and solutions, are not examined. Nevertheless the paper will be useful to specialists in numerical solving of the Euler equations.
