The forty-one papers included in this collection represent Birkhoff's most interesting and influential contributions in algebra and topology. Each of the six sections begins with a brief essay sketching the historical background of the papers in the section. Also included are some citations of papers by others who have further developed the ideas presented in these papers. The collection also contains a preface by Birkhoff, a bibliography of his books (10) and papers (209) covering the period 1933--1986, and a list of his Ph. D. students (1936--1978).
