The paper is a theoretical study of the relations between the eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix M and those of a matrix of the form \(A^*MA\), where A is a commonly rectangular matrix. The main result of the paper is that, under a regularity condition for any relative eigenvalue \(\nu\), there is a corresponding eigenvalue \(\lambda\) of the matrix M so that \(\nu =\rho \lambda\) and \(0<| \rho -1| \leq \cos \theta\) where \(\theta\) is the angle between the subspace S and another subspace called the conjugate complement of S with respect to the matrix M. As a consequence of this theorem, some other similar interesting results on the relative eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix with respect to a subspace have been derived and relationships between the inertia of the above mentioned matrices presented.
