Let R be a prime ring and C be the center of the Martindale quotient ring of R [cf. \textit{W. S. Martindale} IIIrd, J. Algebra 12, 576-584 (1969; Zbl 0175.031)]. A polynomial differential identity (PDI) for R is a polynomial \(p(x_ 1,x_ 2,...,x_ n)\) over C such that for all \(r_ 1,r_ 2,...,r_ n\) in R, \(p(d_ 1(r_ 1),d_ 2(r_ 2),...,d_ k(r_ k),r_{k+1},...,r_ n)=0\) where \(d_ i(r_ i)\) denotes the image of \(r_ i\) under the derivation \(d_ i\) of R. If deg(p) is the usual degree of p and D-deg(p) is the degree of p in the variables \(x_ 1,x_ 2,...,x_ k\) then p is said to be of type (D-deg(p),deg(p)). This paper describes the PDIs of minimal type (w.r.t. the lexicographic order) for prime rings R which do not satisfy a PI. After reducing R to a non- Artinian simple ring which is equal to its socle and in which, for every minimal idempotent e, eRe is isomorphic to the centroid of R, it is established that there is essentially one possibility for a PDI of minimal type for R.
