The author studies the large-time behavior of solutions to the initial value problem for nonlinear hyperbolic-parabolic systems of conservation equations in one space dimension. Under suitable assumptions it is proved that a unique solution exists for all time \(t\geq 0\) and approaches the superposition of the nonlinear and linear diffusion waves constructed in terms of the self-similar solutions to the Burgers equation and the linear heat equation as \(t\to \infty\). The proof is essentially based on the fact that for \(t\to \infty\), the solution to the nonlinear hyperbolic-parabolic system is well approximated by the solution to a semilinear uniformly parabolic system whose viscosity matrix is uniquely determined from the original system. The result obtained is applicable straightforwardly to the equations of viscous (or inviscid) heat- conductive fluids. Detailed proof of the result is given by the author [Proc. R. Soc. Edin. Sect. A 106, 169-194 (1987)]. Independently of the author, \textit{I.-Liang Chern} and \textit{T.-Ping Liu} [Commun. Math. Phys. 110, 503-517 (1987)] prove a similar result for a semilinear uniformly parabolic system.
