The method of successive relaxation (a nonlinear generalization thereof) is applied to a large non-sparse system of equations, resulting from the description of the decay of highly excited heavy nuclei. It is suggested to employ a different, randomly chosen relaxation parameter at each iteration, if the optimal relaxation parameter is not known at all. In the application the relaxation parameter is held constant though, where the system is solved also in a phase transition region with multiple solutions.
