Let C be a convex body of differentiability class \({\mathcal C}^ 3\) in 3- dimensional Euclidean space with positive Gaussian curvature \(\kappa\). The difference of the volume of C and of an inscribed convex polytope of maximum volume having at most n vertices is asymptotically equal to (1/4\(\sqrt{3})(\int \kappa ^{1/4}d\sigma)^ 2(1/n)\) as \(n\to \infty\), the integral denoting a surface integral extended over the boundary of C. This result confirms a conjecture of \textit{L. Fejes Tóth} [Lagerungen in der Ebene, auf der Kugel und im Raum, 2nd ed. (1972; Zbl 0229.52009)]. It complements upper and lower bounds for the volume difference proved by \textit{R. M. Dudley} [J. Approximation Theory 10, 227-236 (1974; Zbl 0275.41011); Corr. ibid. 26, 192-193 (1979; Zbl 0431.41029)] and the author and \textit{P. Kenderov} [Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo, II. Ser. 31, 195- 225 (1982; Zbl 0494.52003)] for all convex bodies resp. for all convex bodies of class \({\mathcal C}^ 2\). A similar result for the Hausdorff metric case is due to \textit{R. Schneider} [Math. Ann. 256, 289-301 (1981; Zbl 0445.52004)].
